History

2006-07: Barrie was the Kelowna Rockets first round pick (18th overall) in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. In his final year of midget hockey, he played with the Juan De Fuca AAA Grizzlies and compiled 43 goals and 130 in a 72 games season.

2007-08: This was Barrie’s rookie season with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL), and he played outstanding at the blueline. He tallied nine goals and 34 assists for a total of 43 points in 64 games. He was also selected to play for Team Pacific at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

2008-09: In Barrie’s second full season with Kelowna, he improved his numbers as well as his game. In 67 games he netted 12 goals and 40 assists for a total of 52 points. Registered four goals and 18 points in 22 playoff games.

Tyson’s father, Len, is a former pro and part owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, so he’s been around the game for a while. He has a very good offensive ability and he does a great job of seeing plays develop and finding open players.

Talent Analysis

An offensive-minded defenseman, Barrie has turned an average second half of the season into a productive playoff performance. A confident puck carrier, he has been a mainstay on the power play ion both his 16- and 17-year-old seasons. He has had the tremendous good fortune to have been paired with Luke Schenn (TOR) and then Tyler Myers (BUF) in Kelowna during the past two seasons, a fact he has acknowledged when queried about his ability to commit to attacking zone play. Barrie does not possess an overpowering shot, but it is consistently accurate and he has the knack of sifting the puck through traffic. He does not necessarily have to get bigger, but he will have to be stronger to excel in professional hockey. While he reminds WHL onlookers of a right-handed shooting Kris Russell (CBJ), Barrie has yet to make a major impact on the international junior stage.

Future

With Myers destined for the NHL next season, Barrie will unquestionably become a leader in Kelowna, a great opportunity to further establish his skills. Barrie will need some time to challenge for a top four position on an NHL team.
