History

2006-07: Howse was selected by the Chilliwack Bruins (WHL) with their first selection (third overall) in the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. He made his WHL debut during this season, scoring one goal in five games. He was a member of Team British Columbia at the Canada Games in 2006. He was a member of Team Pacific at the 2007 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He scored 21 goals and 16 assists in 30 games with the Cariboo Cougars of the BC Major Midget League during the 2006-07 season.

2007-08: In his first full season with Chilliwack (WHL), the forward recroded 17 points (10g+7a) in 54 games.

2008-09: This was expected to be Howse's break out season, and it certainly was. He suffered a mild concussion in a game in Prince George on Oct. 3, missing six games to the injury, but he never looked back after his return at mid-month. He became just the fourth Bruins player to score three goals in one game when he notched a hat trick in a 6-3 road loss to Kootenay on Oct. 18. He registered his second WHL hat trick in a 6-2 victory over the Edmonton Ice on Nov. 8. He recorded a career-high four points on three goals and one assists at Everett in a 5-2 Bruins win on Dec. 27. He matched his personal best of four points in one game when he registered his fourth hat trick of the season and added an assist in a 5-3 home ice win over Red Deer on Jan. 3. He finished the season with 44 points (31g+13a) in 61 games.

Talent Analysis

Howse is a shifty, feisty forward with a nose for the net. He has developed quickly in the WHL with assistance from former Chilliwack Bruins’ teammates Oscar Moller (LA) and Mark Santorelli (NAS). Howse does not dominate physically, but will not shy away from heavy traffic. He is a very good skater, great acceleration. Good understanding of the defensive side of the game, a must in Chilliwack where team currently lacks scoring depth.

Future

Singled out by Chilliwack general manager Darrell Porter for his impressive goal scoring prowess this past season, Howse will be challenged to deliver an improved performance next season as Chilliwack continues to battle through the growing pains of an expansion team. Not a likely a high first or second round selection, but Howse is the type of player that traditionally successful NHL teams with late round picks will seriously consider because they can afford to be patient with key prospects. Compares to valuable role players in the NHL like Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby.
