History

2005-06: In John Armstrong’s second OHL season with the Plymouth Whalers, he scored 37 points (14G, 23A) in 65 games. He did not have the best numbers defensively as he would finish the year at a disappointing -19. Armstrong would also participate in the years CHL/NHL Top Prospects game. The Flames must have liked what they saw, because they selected him 87th overall in the 2006 NHL Draft.


2006-07: The Unionville, Ontario, native began the year in Plymouth, but would be traded midway through the season to the Peterborough Petes. By season’s end, Armstrong would put up 45 points (19G, 26A) in 61 games.


2007-08: In Armstrong’s current and final season in the OHL, he is second on the Petes in scoring with 57 points behind potential 2008 1st Round selection, Zach Bogosian. The Peterbough Petes finished the year in the No.8 spot in the OHL’s Eastern Conference and were recently eliminated by the Belleville Bulls (the Eastern conference’s No.1 and OHL’s overall No.2) in the first round of the OHL playoffs.

Talent Analysis

While the 6’2, 188 lbs centerman did not put up ground breaking offensive numbers in his four junior league seasons, he has shown the propensity to set up plays and score big goals. Scouts often say his strong puck handling ability is what sets him apart from other Flames prospects. The 2006 CHL/NHL Top Prospects skills competition also revealed that Armstrong has a very good shot (90+ mph). He does have some holes in his defensive game, that he’ll need to patch up to make it onto the Flames roster.

Future

Projects as a checker, but needs to improve defense to do so.
