History

Alex Berry spent the 2004-05 season skating for the Junior Bruins of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. He was a major contributor to the team, helping the club capture the EJHL championship. Berry finished the year with 21 goals and 31 assists in 63 games. The Leafs picked him up with a fifth round selection. Alex is the son of former NHL coach Bob Berry.

2005-06: Berry saw limited action at the University of Massachusetts due to a serious leg injury suffered on Nov. 11. The Maple Leafs fifth round selection in the 2005 Entry Draft scored once in the Minutemen’s exhibition game against St. Francis Xavier, and appeared in only 24 games on the season. He tallied 2 points (1g, 1a) and 33 penalty minutes.

2006-07: As a sophomore, he improved his overall stats, and appeared in 29 games for the Minutemen. He totaled 13 points (7g, 6a) and 34 penalty minutes, and finished out the season with a +5 rating.

2007-08: This season marked Berry’s junior year with the University of Massachusetts. He appeared in 34 games with the club, finishing with 17 points (10g+7a). He led the team in penalty minutes with 63, and had the sixth best shooting percentage on the team (.118) on 85 shots. He recorded four multi-point games and tallied two power play goals and another pair of shorthanded goals. He scored seven goals in his last nine games and a goal in Game Two of the Hockey East Quarterfinals against #5 New Hampshire (3/15).

Talent Analysis

At 6’2, 195 pounds, Berry plays a rugged game and always finishes his checks. While he’s not a gifted scorer, he always works hard to create scoring chances and he’s very strong on the puck.
